CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

Application Overview

ICR accepted proposals for individual presentations, posters, organized sessions, performances and gallery exhibit submissions for its 2nd international conference, Crossroads II: Community-Based Collaborative Research for Social Justice. The goal of the conference presentations was to explore, exhibit, discuss, critique and debate how community-based collaborative research (CBCR), based on the principles of community participation in the research process, can address critical issues of social justice in health, education, artistic and cultural representation, economic development, and the environment.

We encouraged submissions from researchers, community partners, artists, activists, service providers, health professionals, educators, students, policymakers and funders that address CBCR and social justice issues, present project-based case studies and provide critical reflection pertaining to the overall conference theme and the following three major conference tracks:

1) Identifying and addressing social inequities and disparities, including their root causes.

This track focuses on the conceptual, methodological, ethical, and substantive issues of CBCR in examining and responding to inequities and disparities, with particular emphasis on the sources and solutions to problems of inequities in affected communities.

2) Translating science into practice and action in diverse communities.

This track focuses on exploring effective ways to translate research results and evidence-based interventions into effective programs and policies using CBCR methods to improve applicability and feasibility in multiple sites and within diverse community contexts.

3) Integrating artistic and cultural expression into research and dissemination processes in innovative ways.

This track focuses on the integration of artistic expression or cultural representation with CBCR to increase awareness of social inequities and disseminate information that makes research findings more understandable and accessible, and more likely to mobilize communities for change.

We strongly encouraged presentations that are participatory, interactive, include researchers and their community partners, promote multiple learning processes and use innovative approaches to present information. We encouraged presenters to use their own creativity to design a format that will foster active participation and engage all session participants. Some examples of creative approaches include but are not limited to one-slide talking points, narrative storytelling, debate, games, and skits/role play.
