Hartford Community Builds AIDS Memorial
November 5, 1996 - Hartford, CT
On Monday, December 2, Salvatore Scalora, curator and professor of art at the University of Connecticut, will assist the public in building a community AIDS memorial as part of Hartford's World AIDS Day 1996 Commemoration. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral at 45 Church Street (across from the old G. Fox Building). The community is invited to contribute mementos-photos, flowers, candles, poems, or other personal items-that remind them of the people they have lost to the virus.

"The altar provides a forum for people to express themselves," says Scalora. "It is a time for the living to remember and commemorate the dead. " Adds Kim Radda, Hartford's World AIDS Day Chairperson, "This is an opportunity for all of us to come together and focus on this one issue; the impact of HIV/AIDS in our community."
A variety of activities, including music, dance, guest speakers, and displays will occur throughout the day. Hartford public school children will also exhibit World AIDS Day posters that they created based on this year's theme, One World, One Hope. Admission is free.

After December 2, the AIDS memorial will move to The Institute for Community Research's gallery at 2 Hartford Square West. An opening reception for Vision, Voice, Remembrance: The Hartford AIDS Memorial Exhibit will be held on Thursday, December 5 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The exhibit will run through February 28, 1997. Altar items which are labeled with identifying information will be returned at the close of the exhibit.

Hartford's World AIDS Day 1996 Commemoration is sponsored in part by AIDS Project/Hartford, Artists Against AIDS, Gay & Lesbian Health Collective, The Greater Hartford Arts Council, Hartford Dispensary, Hispanic Health Council, The Institute for Community Research, Latinos/as Contra SIDA, Summit Medical Center, and the Urban League of Greater Hartford.
